Recycled and Secondary Aggregates and their Use in Construction

Recycled and Secondary Aggregates and their Use in Construction

Over 30 billion tonnes of non-renewal resource in the form of aggregates are used per annum worldwide in the construction sector. A significant amount of this can potentially be replaced by recycled and secondary aggregates (RSAs). Funded jointly by BCA’s Sustainable Construction Capability Development Fund and the Singapore construction industry, a state of art review of global knowledge from over 4000 publications on RSAs and their use in construction, undertaken by Prof R K Dhir OBE and his team over 2½ years, has recently been concluded. In this workshop, he will discuss the salient aspects of this review relating to potential use of recycled aggregates (RA), glass cullet (GC) and sewage sludge incinerated bottom ash (SIBA) in concrete, geotechnical, road pavement and other applications.
The workshop aims to provide understanding of:
• The state of the art review of global research covering major RSA waste streams.
• Characteristics of the selected RSA materials and discovering their potential for use.
• What has been achieved globally and can be used and potential for further applications.
• Dismantling barriers to the use of RSA in construction.
• Environmental Issues and the status and role of the related standards and specifications.
• Case studies to demonstrate potential for use of RA, GC and SIBA materials.
• Potential for developing innovative and sustainable further use of RSA materials.

High-performance cooling tower formed at the double
Posted on Sunday 27 April 2014 - 13:28:10 by admin
Dear Members,

Following article from Doka is very interesting!

High-performance cooling tower formed at the double

The population in Krishnapatnam, the port city in Andhra Pradesh, India, has a high population density of 500 persons per km², and rising. In order to meet these increasing energy needs, a new coal-fired power plant is currently being built by Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company Ltd. (APPDCL) with a capacity of 2 x 800 MW. Construction company Tata Projects Ltd. received the megawatt order and entrusted the formwork construction of the cooling tower to Doka with its decades of international experience. The high-performing self-climbing Doka cooling tower formwork SK175 represents the ideal solution for such large-scale projects.

[workshop] 21-21 March 2013 Eurocode Design of Precast Concrete Structures
Posted on Monday 25 February 2013 - 03:48:02 by admin
Prefabrication as a construction method and concrete as a building material have many advantages over traditional
construction methods and other building materials, which include speed, economy, high quality and versatility. It is
an industrialized way of construction, with inherent benefits that has led to the proliferation of precast construction
around the world. The full benefits that that this technique has to offer can be enjoyed when proper attention is paid
at the planning, design, fabrication and construction stages.
This seminar aims at familiarizing participants with the issues involved in the planning, design, construction and
safety aspects of precasting / prefabrication with emphasis on high rise precast concrete structures. The course
gives a synthesis of the most recent knowledge about the design of precast building structures against a background
of 21st century innovations in concrete production and construction technology.

Ir. Arnold Van Acker
Ir. Van Acker has been working for the last 50 years in the precast concrete
industry. Since 1987, he has been working at the R&D department of the
Consolis Group, a leading European manufacturer of precast concrete products
and structures, with more than 100 precast plants in 20 countries, over 8000
workers and a turn over exceeding 1 billion Euros. He has been a member of the
Belgian standardisation committee for the design of concrete structures,
member of the Drafting Committee of the European Standard Eurocode 2 for the
design of concrete structures, and convenor of the Work Group “Structural
precast concrete products” of in the European Committee for Standardisation
CEN, CEN TC 229. He is also an expert in the fire resistance of precast concrete
building structures.
He is still very active in prefabrication, more precisely as an expert of the
Belgian Precast Concrete Federation (FEBE). He is also visiting professor at the
High School for Engineers in Ghent, and member of the International Concrete
Federation fib – Commission on Prefabrication – since 1978 and chairman from
1986 till 2002. He has been awarded with the FIP medal for outstanding
contributions, and is internationally known through his conferences and Master
Courses on the design of precast building structures all over the world.
