High Performance Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Concrete Composites for Damage Resistant and Sustainable Structures

Abstract
The structural engineering community is facing new challenges. Not only do structures have to be safe, they also need to
provide long‐term durability and damage resistance, reduce impact on natural resources, and have reduced energy
consumption and green house gas emission. Reinforced concrete structures are often exposed to both environmental and
mechanical loading conditions which cause them to deteriorate at a much faster rate than expected. The deterioration is
intimately related to cracking because cracks provide pathways for water and aggressive agents to penetrate the concrete
which greatly accelerates the deterioration process. The talk will focus on a novel approach, called the Deterioration
Reduction through Multi‐scale crack Control or DRMC approach to enhance the service life of concrete structures. The DRMC
approach utilizes a high performance hybrid fiber reinforced concrete composite (HyFRC) that consists of both micro and
micro fibers to control cracking from the micro‐to the macro level. The micro fibers control micro cracking at onset and the
synergy between micro‐and macro fibers provides strain hardening behavior which delays macro crack formation up to high
strain and stress levels. A few examples on the effect of HyFRC on durability and performance of large scale reinforced
concrete structures will be discussed. Deterioration reduction through micro‐and macro crack control not only enhances the
performance of reinforced concrete structures when exposed to mechanical loading conditions but also reduces the reaction
rates of expansive deterioration processes. For example in case of corrosion, longer times to corrosion initiation and lower
active corrosion rates were observed in the HyFRC specimens when compared to reinforced specimens containing plain
concrete matrices.
Biography
Claudia P. Ostertag is Professor and Chair of the Academic Program in the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at
the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining the CEE faculty at Berkeley, she was a staff member at the Max Planck
Institute in Stuttgart, Germany, a staff scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg,
Maryland, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. Ostertag’s research areas focus on nano‐and
micro‐structural engineering of high performance materials, damage characterization, and performance enhancement of
reinforced concrete structures through the use of high performance materials. She received numerous awards for her
research in Fiber Reinforced Composites including the NIST Director’s award, the NIST Research Innovation Award, the UC
Berkeley Faculty Research Award, the NSF CAREER award, and the IMSE Innovation Award. Her current research
concentrates on damage resistant, sustainable and durable concretes with reduced energy consumption and green house
gas emission.
