In spite of numerous efforts to eliminate cracks from concrete structures, there are still many cracked concrete structures. Some cracks are very harmful and should be repaired as soon as possible, while other cracks are almost harmless. Therefore, a good guideline on how to deal with cracks in concrete structures has long been needed. JCI first published Practical Guideline for Investigation and Repair of Concrete Structures in 1980, a second version followed in 1987, and a third version was followed in 2003. In this third version, the English edition was also published. It was presented in Singapore in a seminar in March 2005 which was overwhelmingly received. Then in 2009, a fourth version was published in Japanese in 2009. This volume, titled Practical Guideline for Investigation, Repair and Strengthening of Cracked Concrete Structures -2009“ is the English edition of this latest version. It is believed that this guideline will be of much use when cracks are detected in existing concrete structures, both in Japan and overseas. JCI-SCI is pleased to announce this seminar in which all seminar participants will be given a copy of this latest guideline.

Recycled and Secondary Aggregates:
Use in Concrete Construction

This one day Seminar, which should be of interest to all those engaged in concrete construction, such as design/specifying engineers, contractors, precast concrete
manufacturers, ready mixed concrete suppliers, recycled and secondary aggregates suppliers, demolition contractors, will deal with the fundamentals, technology and practice of the use of recycled and secondary aggregates in concrete construction and uses case studies to show what has been achieved and the challenges that lay ahead in overcoming the barriers against the use of RSA and in so doing promote sustainable concrete construction.

The one day Seminar will consist of 7(seven) Lectures conducted by three prominent
lecturers in this field. Don’t miss this great opportunity!

Barriers to Progressing Concrete into 21st Century

Professor Ravindra K. Dhir OBE
Emeritus Professor, Concrete Technolgy, University of Dundee
Visiting Professor, Civil Engineering, Trinity College, Dublin
Director, Applying Concrete Knowledge
r.k,dhir@dundee.ac.uk

It can be argued that the way engineers specify, and ready-mix suppliers/building contractors produce concrete, has not greatly changed since the advent of concrete as we know it. This has given rise to some fundamental barriers to modernising of concrete and its fully embracing sustainability, in a well-informed and matured manner. Indeed, if we are not careful, there are some serious risks that can bring concrete into disrepute.

This seminar – that should interest design engineers, building contractors, ready-mix producers, concrete materials suppliers, government departments, regulatory and certifying authorities – will identify and discuss the malpractices that have remained within the concrete construction industry and have compromised the development of concrete as a modern construction material. The changes that are required, and will be responsive to the present needs, even though this may call for extensive research and development work, will also be discussed.

The Half-Day Seminar will consist of three Lectures (See program).
